Dealing with Ransomware

What would you do if you couldn’t access your business data?

How important is your customer and business data? For many organisations, data is among their most important assets. Losing access to it could have financial, reputational, or damaging production implications. Without access to data, or key software, your business might even grind to a halt for a period. How much would you pay to regain access to this data?

Ransomware is a form of malware designed to deny you access to key elements of your system or data by encrypting the files. A ransom is demanded with the promise that you will once again have access to everything once the business has paid.

How does ransomware end up in your system?

As with many cybersecurity problems, the first line of defence is always the frontline staff that use your system. Most commonly, ransomware is downloaded when a malicious link in a phishing email is clicked. A simple, yet costly, mistake.

Another common way is through drive-by downloading without the user’s knowledge. Ordinarily, this is triggered when a user visits a malicious website.

Combatting ransomware through education

Not every ransomware download is through user error, however, educating your staff would be a solid brick in the fortress wall. Every member of your business, including the C suite, should have regular cybersecurity training.

Repeated education enables your staff to learn about new cyberattack methods, and other social engineering attacks. This will arm your business against any hacking attempts.

Keeping systems up-to-date and protected

As cyberattacks grow more sophisticated, developers always look to find ways to protect their software. This means there will often be patches and updates available for your system. It is best practice to make sure that your system is consistently updated to help harden your endpoints.
