Important things to remember when relocating offices

No business is created to steadily stagnate. When you become a business owner, it is because you want to grow. A side effect of growth is that at some point you will become too big for your premises. And that means relocating.
Relocating is fun though. Once you have your office, and you have splashed the corporate colours around the walls, you have your furniture right where you want it. The feng shui is good. If only it were that simple.
Relocation is not as easy as just turning up to a building and plonking your technology in the exact place you want it. There is always something to consider when relocating offices.
Getting the Wi-Fi and Telephone system installed and working
Your Wi-Fi and phone lines are probably key to your business. How much can you really achieve if you are not contactable, or you are unable to go online. This should be high on your list of priorities. In fact, you should really have had this planned for weeks in advance.
Keep in mind, especially if you are thinking about switching providers, that is likely to be some down time. If this is going to affect your customers, make sure they are aware of the changes. If you outsource your IT support, they should be able to help you to make sure there is as little disruption as possible.
It might be that you are moving into serviced offices. If this is the case, there may be some essential facilities included in your contract, but make sure you check this out long before your move begins.
Computer positioning and data cabling
It would be nice to think that you could turn up at your new offices and all the power outlets will be most convenient place, and that there is enough power points to go around. Rarely is this the case, however.
Every building is different. And, where you might have had your business set up perfectly; it may not be the case during the relocation.
Unfortunately, it isn’t as simple as buying extra long wires. And remember, all wires are equal, but some wires are more equal than others. In short, without proper advice, this could get very complicated.
Your IT department, or your IT Support company, should be able to help here. They will know exactly what wires to use, and how best to circumnavigate the office. If you are unsure, talk to professionals, otherwise your relocation could become very costly.
Package your computers and technology properly
Often, when relocating an office or your home, there is a casualty or two. It might be something innocuous like a potted plant, or a bit of wall art. What you don’t want to happen is to damage a printer or a computer in transit.
It probably sounds like common sense, but it is important that you check the safety and security of your packaging. Mistakes are easy to make in the jostle and bustle of moving day; so, taking the extra few seconds to secure your items could save you a lot of money.
