Why You Should Have Someone Outside Look at Your Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity is a huge topic of conversation for businesses, and it is unlikely to get any smaller. In fact, as we discover more ways to keep cyber-rascals at bay, they seem to find new ways in. No matter the size of your business, you are not immune from cyberattacks. Whilst you are holding a metric ton of customer data on your system, it’s always good to have cybersecurity on your mind.

The thing is businesses can get complacent. They have firewalls set up, antiviruses performing their magic, and of course spam filters are filtering their spam. It’s easy to think that you’re all protected and sorted. And when you talk to your team, they probably all agree. With that, nothing will get done.

With that knowledge, perhaps it’s wise that someone outside of your business has a look at exactly how strong your cybersecurity is.

Fresh Eyes, Fresh Threats:

Your internal team knows your systems inside-out, which is brilliant. But sometimes, that familiarity can make them blind to hidden vulnerabilities. An external expert brings a fresh pair of eyes, thinking like a hacker to uncover those sneaky weaknesses you might miss. It's like asking your mate to proofread that novel you’re writing – they'll spot typos you glossed over, right?

Mimicking the bad guys

You’ve probably read all about “ethical hackers”. Essentially, they’re the good guys pretending to be bad guys. They use real world attacks to see where your defences falter. An IT company wouldn’t exactly go to the same lengths, but a pen test (for example) does probe the system for weaknesses that the bad guys will try to exploit. By thinking like the bad guys, your external test will find holes you may not have thought of.

Unbiased and Objective

Let's be honest, sometimes internal teams can get a bit...attached to their security setup. An external assessment removes that bias, providing an objective and independent view of your strengths and weaknesses. It's like having a neutral referee in a rugby match – they'll call it as they see it, no favouritism involved.

Prioritising the Patchwork

So, the assessment finds some chinks in your armour. Don't panic! The report will help you prioritise vulnerabilities based on risk, helping you focus on fixing the most critical ones first. It's like triage for your cybersecurity – patch up the biggest leaks first, then deal with the smaller ones later. Your outside hacker will advise you on how to manage the problems.

Peace of Mind (and Regulatory Compliance)

Knowing your defences are watertight brings peace of mind, especially in today's threat-filled landscape. Plus, for some industries, regular external assessments are mandatory for regulatory compliance. So, it's a win-win – you sleep soundly knowing you're protected, and you tick those legal boxes too.

Talk to us about a Cyber Security Test

Investing in an external cybersecurity assessment is an investment in your business's future. It's not just about ticking boxes; it's about proactively safeguarding your data, your reputation, and your bottom line. Remember, prevention is always cheaper than cure, especially when it comes to cybercrime.
